Bio of Richard Whalen

Los Flamencos de la Bodega would never have existed without the unwavering vision of a young man named Richard Whalen.  He was born in New York into a family with show business roots as his grandmother was vaudeville queen on the Orpheum RKO circuit.

Richard spent his childhood in New York until being sent overseas as a young man to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces which were liberating Europe during WWII.  It is likely that Richard first encountered and developed a passion for Flamenco while serving in Europe.  Upon returning to America, Richard moved from New York to Boulder, Colorado where he earned a university Degree in Art before heading further West to San Francisco in the 1950s where he studied sculpting with a Lithuanian immigrant named Ben Shahn (an artist who had previously worked with world famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera).

Richard Whalen was the epitome of a bohemian artist, a multi-talented renaissance man who embodied pure genius as a painter, sculptor, poet and intellectual whose creative works have no equal in the art world.  Although Richard left this world in September 2009, his legacy will live on in his multitude of original artworks and perhaps most importantly, his introduction of Flamenco to American audiences.

Los Flamencos de la Bodega jamás habrían existido sin la firme e inquebrantable visión de un joven llamado Richard Whalen. Nació en Nueva York en una familia con raíces en el mundo del espectáculo, ya que su abuela fue reina del vodevil en el circuito Orpheum RKO.

Richard pasó su infancia en Nueva York hasta que, siendo joven, fue enviado al extranjero para servir en las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos durante la liberación de Europa en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Probablemente fue durante su estancia en Europa cuando tuvo su primer contacto con el flamenco y nació en él una profunda pasión por este arte. Al regresar a Estados Unidos, Richard se trasladó de Nueva York a Boulder, Colorado, donde obtuvo un título universitario en Bellas Artes, antes de mudarse aún más al oeste, a San Francisco, en los años cincuenta, donde estudió escultura con un inmigrante lituano llamado Ben Shahn (un artista que había trabajado previamente con el mundialmente reconocido pintor mexicano Diego Rivera).

Richard Whalen fue el auténtico ejemplo de artista bohemio: un hombre del Renacimiento con múltiples talentos, que encarnaba la genialidad pura como pintor, escultor, poeta e intelectual, y cuyas obras creativas no tienen parangón en el mundo del arte. Aunque Richard nos dejó en septiembre de 2009, su legado perdurará tanto en la multitud de obras originales que dejó, como - y quizá aún más importante - en su papel como introductor del flamenco ante el público estadounidense.
